“Are we visible in AI search worldwide?” sounds like one question, but it covers different languages, countries, industries, buyer intents and answer systems. No single ChatGPT screenshot can establish a global position. A useful global AI visibility benchmark states what it sampled, what it missed and which change the result supports.
Define the decision before the metric
A company selling to five countries should not measure all countries equally just to claim “global coverage”. Start with the commercial decision: where do you sell, what product can you deliver there, and what would a qualified buyer ask? Then set a measurement scope that matches those markets. If the service is Europe-first, label the benchmark Europe-first. “Global” is appropriate only when the sample and capability extend beyond one region.
Use a fixed sampling frame
A practical first benchmark can use three regions, two countries per region, two buyer intents per country and two prompt phrasings per intent. That is 24 questions per platform. Run the same questions on the chosen systems and record all responses, including ones where your brand does not appear. This is a sample, not a census of every possible AI answer.
Keep the prompt version, date, language, country context and signed-in state with each row. Do not secretly replace a prompt after seeing an unfavorable answer. If a provider changes its model or interface, note the break in comparability.
Score four different outcomes separately
- Discovery: was the brand named when the buyer did not provide its name?
- Accuracy: did the answer describe the actual product, geography and capability correctly?
- Citation: which exact owned or independent URL was offered as a source?
- Commercial path: could a qualified reader reach a relevant page or next step?
Report the numerator and denominator for each measure: for example, 7 mentions in 24 answers, rather than “29% global visibility” without the sample. Keep brand-name prompts separate from category-discovery prompts. A frequent but inaccurate mention is not a win.
Prevent geography from distorting the result
Raw totals tend to favor the country with the most prompts or the language with the strongest existing content. Show each country and language before any combined figure. If you calculate a combined score, publish the weighting rule in advance and tie it to business priorities, not to the result you want to announce. A weighted score should never hide a country where the brand is absent or incorrectly described.
For European multilingual execution, read the Europe B2B playbook. It explains when to localize a page and when a new country page would be thin duplication.
Separate search visibility from AI answer observations
Use Search Console for page-level Google impressions, clicks, indexing and query trends. Use a controlled prompt log for observed AI answers and citations. Use analytics and CRM data, where available, for qualified traffic and inquiries. These are related but different measurements. A Google impression is not a read; an AI mention is not a lead; and an attributed lead is not proof that one content edit caused it.
Google states that its AI search features follow core SEO practices, with no additional technical requirement to appear. That makes crawlability, useful content and clear page relationships the starting point, not a promise that a special schema will force inclusion. See Google's guidance for site owners.
Turn the benchmark into an improvement loop
For each missing or wrong answer, inspect the sources the system used and the page that should have answered the question. Classify the gap: unclear service description, weak supporting evidence, wrong market language, crawl issue or no independent corroboration. Fix one class of gap, record the change date and repeat the same sample. Keep the original answers as a baseline rather than rewriting the story after the fact.
A credible report includes an “unknown” column. Some systems do not expose citations for every response, and different users may see different outputs. If you cannot verify a claimed referral or recommendation, label it unverified.
What MaxDesign can demonstrate
MXD OS connects pages, search signals, prompt observations and follow-up actions in one workflow. That is a capability we can show. It does not prove that MaxDesign is ranked first by every AI system worldwide. Our published Europe test records both positive and unfavorable observations. For a service discussion, see the B2B AI search visibility page; for the underlying measurement basics, start with the AI visibility measurement guide.
